A Mass of Christian Burial for Evelyn Teresa Hawkins, age 98, of Ossian, Iowa was held on Wednesday, September 28, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian with the Rev. Monsignor Cletus Hawes as the celebrant. Burial was in the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Cemetery in Ossian, Iowa. Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Ossian, Iowa assisted the family with the arrangements.

Evelyn Teresa, daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Drilling) Bodensteiner, was born on August 8, 1913 in St. Lucas, Iowa. She attended St. Francis de Sales Elementary School and graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School. Evelyn was united in marriage to Elmer Hawkins on August 22, 1933 by Monsignor M.J. Thiltgen. They became the parents of four children. Evelyn was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and Rosary Society. She was an honorary member of Catholic Daughters of America Court #983 in Ossian and also the longest serving member of the local court. Her faith and love of family sustained her life. She was a 4-H Leader and part of the Farm Bureau Women's Group. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, cooking, baking, and was an accomplished seamstress.

Evelyn Teresa Hawkins died Sunday, September 25, 2011 at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer who died on July 23, 1973; 2 granddaughters, Christine (Hawkins) Ryan, Ann Marie Green; 6 siblings, Leonard J. Bodensteiner, Marcellus Bodenteiner, Agnes Winter, Hugo Bodensteiner, Leo Bodensteiner, Chris Bodensteiner; and a son-in-law, Glen Green.

Evelyn is survived by her four children: Joan (Clifton) Green Nelson of Alden, Iowa, James Hawkins of Ossian, Iowa, Carol Hawkins, OSF of San Antonio, Texas, and Kathryn (Al) Block of Castle Rock, Colorado; 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren; 4 siblings, Lucille Fanning, Rev. Peter Bodensteiner, Olivia Everet, Dr. Cletus Bodensteiner; and a sister-in-law, Loretta Hawkins.
