Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Lillie S. Smith, age 93, of Decorah, Iowa, were held Friday, May 6, 1994 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa with Rev. Beth A. Olson officiating. Casket bearers were Harley Fagerlie, Buz Lensing, Carol J. Lensing, Chuck Lensing, David Lynch, and Michael Smith. Honorary casket bearers were Helen Bangs, Amanda Sensor, and Gladys Tollefson. Burial was at the Lutheran Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Lillie, daughter of Hjalmar and Martha (Larson) Meckelson, was born June 29, 1900 in Oslo, Norway. She was baptized June 30, 1900 in Oslo, Norway. She came to the United States in 1909 and was confirmed December 13, 1914 in West Union, Iowa. She attended the public school system in Clermont, Iowa. Lillie married George C. Smith on July 19, 1915 in Elgin, Iowa. They lived in the Clermont area until moving to Decorah 52 years ago. She and her husband had the Dray Line in Decorah, Iowa. After George passed away in 1954, she continued the Dray Line business for 10 more years. Lillian was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Luren Singing Society Auxiliary. She enjoyed housework, visiting with people and baking.
Lillie became a resident at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville on January 24, 1994. She died Tuesday, May 3, 1994 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, LaVanda Malone, a son Reidar Smith, one brother Arthur Meckelson, and one granddaughter, Ivanell Smith.
Lillie is survived by her son-in-law, Clyde Malone of Aledo, Illinois; a daughter-in-law, Nellie Smith of Cresco, Iowa; 6 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great granddaughters.
