Funeral services for Merlin M. Martie were held on Tuesday, April 17 at 11:00 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Iowa. The Rev. Howard W. Wolfgram officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Joel Holden, Les Greverson, Wayne Martie, Leo Martie, Dennis Kohrs, and Alfred Cole. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia, Iowa.

Merlin Melvin Martie, son of Joseph and Caroline (Peterson) Martie, was born March 17, 1918 in Marion Township, Clayton County near Elgin, Iowa He was baptized into the Lutheran Faith as an infant. Merlin attended the rural school near his home. On October 17, 1938 he was married to Marjorie Thelma Christianson at Elkader, Iowa. The had 4 children. They have lived in the Postville, Iowa and Castalia, Iowa areas all of their lives.

Merlin died Sunday morning, April 15, 1990 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. He is preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Alfred Martie, Nicholi Martie, Louie Martie, and Walter Martie; and 1 sister, Cornelia Holden.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; a son, Mervin Martie of Mineral Point, Wisconsin; 3 daughters, Dorothy Reed of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, Marlene Mengelsen of Spencer, Iowa, and Linda Mundt of Ossian, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
