Luann Ruth Haas

Luann Ruth Haas, daughter of Roland and Beverly (Brandt) Peck, was born April 5, 1939, in the Postville Hospital at Postville, Iowa. She died Tuesday July 5, 1994 at her home near Frankville, Iowa. She was 55 years old.

On June 1, 1958, Luann was united in marriage with Paul Kilcher of Fredericksburg, Iowa. They lived on a farm near Fredericksburg and later moved to Frankville. They were the parents of two children, Jeffrey and Julie. On August 10, 1968, she was married to Dr. H. E. Haas of Calmar, Iowa. They lived at Marquette, Iowa, and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. To this union a son, Addison, was born.

Luann attended a one-room school near her parents' farm west of Frankville. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1957. She began her newspaper career as the society editor of the Decorah Newspapers shortly after graduating from high school. Over a period of 24 years, she was employed by the Laurens (Iowa) Sun as advertising manager, the Prairie Spy (Wisc.) as editor, the Courier Press (Prairie du Chien) as advertising manager, the New Hampton Newspapers as news editor and the Prairie du Chien Shopping News as a sales representative. Over the years, other employment consisted of working as a private employment counselor at Bloomington, Ill. and as a manager of the Prairie du Chien Country Club and the Prairie du Chien Eagles Club.

While in high school, Luann was named to the Quill and Scroll, an international honorary society for high school journalists and received honorable mention in news writing from the Iowa State College chapter of Sigma Delta Chi. She was a former member of the Prairie du Chien Downtown Businessmen's Association and the Prairie du Chien Eagles Auxiliary. Luann was a member of the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church, a member of the Women of the UPC, a former member of the youth fellowship group and the church choir. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. In 1944 Luann was ordained as an Elder.

Surviving are her children, Jeffrey Kilcher and his wife, Michelle, of Normal, Ill., Julie (Kilcher) Heath of Cedar Rapids, and Addison Haas of rural Postville; one grandson, Adam Heath of Dubuque; a sister, Judy Jacobson and her husband, Gordon, of Clermont; two nieces, Mrs. James (Jackie) Halstead of West Union and Mrs. Brent (Joni) Nordhus of Delano, Minn., two nephews, Daniel Jacobson of West Union and Greg Jacobson of Postville; three aunts, Ruth Allen of Postville, Goldie Peck of Oelwein and Ethel Brandt of Decorah. She is preceded in death by her grandparents and her parents.

Services were held Friday July 8, 1994 at the Frankville Presbyterian Church in Frankville, Iowa. The Rev. Drew E. Robertson officiated. Special music was provided by JoAnn Uhlenhake, Janice Koenig, Lowell Brandt and Loren Brandt. The casket bearers were Adam Heath, Daniel Jacobson, Greg Jacobson, James Halstead, Harold Peck, Loren Brandt and Garret Paris. The Schutte Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Frankville Cemetery.
