Here is the Obituary for James S. Smalley, from the Preston Republican of February 27, 1964.

James S. Smalley, 75, of Mabel passed away last Thursday morning following a long illness, at a Rochester hospital where he had been the last few months. He was born September, 30, 1888, in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, son of James R. and Sarah (Kenyon) Smalley. On March 6, 1913, he married Ellen Brenna, and they farmed in the Hesper and Mabel area all of their lives. Mrs. Smalley passed away last October 14. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, one son, one brother, and one sister. He leaves to mourn his departure one son, Julian of Mabel; one daughter, Virginia (Mrs. Charles Blexrud) of Spring Grove; two grand daughters; and two brothers, Sidney of Preston, and Ray of Decorah, Iowa. All have our sympathy. Funeral services were held last Saturday afternoon in the Mabel First Lutheran Church, Rev. Bruce Boyce officiating, and he was laid to rest in the Mabel Cemetery.
