Merle Edwin Stee, Sr.

Funeral services were held, Tuesday, May 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia for Merle Stee, Sr., who passed away at his home in Castalia on Saturday, May 18 of a heart attack. The Rev. Arthur J. Tolo was in charge of the rites; burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia.

Merle Edwin Stee, St., son of Melvin and Ellen (Hegland) Stee, was born June 30, 1905 near Castalia. He was baptized in infancy at the Stavanger Lutheran Church near Ossian. He was confirmed November 9, 1919 by Rev. Kvamme at the Stavanger Lutheran Church. He attended the rural schools of the community and graduated from Postville High School in 1924.

On December 22, 1929 he was united in marriage to Sarah Chambers at Octavia, Nebraska. To this union was born three children: Zonna (Mrs. William Wullner) of Postville; Merle Stee, Jr. of Castalia and Mary (Mrs. Jerry Lee) of Terre Haute, Indiana. He spent his life in the Castalia and Ossian areas, with the exception of about four years in Nebraska. He was a member of the Castalia Zion Lutheran Church. He was a Winneshiek County employee.

He is survived by his wife and three children, ten grandchildren, three brothers, Herbert and Harlan of Castalia and Morton of Decorah and one sister Anna (Mrs. Edwin Engelhardt) of Castalia. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Attending the services from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Lee, Stephanie and David of Terre Haute, Indiana; Mrs. Clara Graybill of David City, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Jones of DeForest, Wisconsin; Dianne Allen of Madison, Wisconsin; Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Stee, Jr.; Mr. and Mrs. Oberlin Hegland, Mrs. Carl Neverhelm, Dale Hegland and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wullner, of Cedar Rapids and others from Decorah, West Union, Fayette, McGregor, Luana, Calmar, Nordness, Clermont, Waukon, Ossian, Postville, Frankville and Castalia.
