Francis W. Horan
Services for Francis W. Horan, a farmer from the Castalia area were held on Friday, October 13 at the Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, with burial in the St. Peter's Cemetery at Clermont. Horan died October 9 at the Grandview Healthcare Center in Oelwein, Iowa. The Rev. Tom Schwinn conducted the services and the Lector was Lee Stammeyer. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Thomas Horan, John Horan, Kevin Horan, Arthur Horan, Stephen Horan, and Charles Horan.
Francis "Shanty" William Horan was born December 1, 1908 to William and Catherine (Shea) Horan of Castalia, Iowa.
Horan was a graduate of Clermont High School. He served in the U.S. Army in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. He was employed 22 years at John Deere in Waterloo where he lived. He retired in 1969 and moved back to West Union.
He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Richard, Donald, and Lawrence and two sisters: Arlene Horan and Mrs. Raymond (Irene) Paulson.
He was a membver of the Holy Name Church in West Union, the Knights of Columbus, and the VFW Waterloo Post.
