Frances Margaret (Hauer) Kafka was born on March 20, 1922 at Festina, Iowa, the daughter of Michael & Theresa (Rausch) Hauer - three days
before the death of her father.She attended St. Mary's School in Festina. After school she was employed at Schupanitz General Store (post office, telephone office)
She was united in marriage to Paul J. Kafka on June 30, 1941 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church by the Rev. A.J. Rubly.
After Paul left for the service she was employed by Firestone Stores and Coast to Coast in Decorah and more recently at Sauser's Hardware at Calmar for 28 years, Festina School lunch bookeeper for 20 years and Dessel's Furniture in West Union for 16 years. Frances enjoyed her grandchildren, reading and traveling.
Frances died on August 17, 2001 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, at the age of 79. She was preaceded in death by her parents, a son Jan Paul Kafka in February 1977, two sons in infancy, her husband Paul in September 1999, and sisters Elizabeth Lechtenberg and Rose Cremer and brother Hugo Hauer.
She is survived by daughter Michele Elsbernd and her husband Bob of Fort Atkinson. Grandsons Brandon Elsbernd and his wife Denise of Fort Atkinson and Justin Elsbernd of Fort Atkinson. Grandaughter Heather Kafka Lenton and her husband Darren of Austin, Texas; daughter-in-law Beth Fromme of Austin, Texas and sister Theresa Cremer of La Crescent, Mn.
Mass of Christian Burial was August 20, 2001 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina with internment in the church cemetary.
The service was conducted by Msgr. Cletus Hawes. James Buchheit served as lector and Roger Reihle was the eucharistic minister. Casketbearers were: John Cremer, Don Cremer, Darrell Hauer, Tom Kafka, Ireanus Lechtenberg, James Buchheit and Roger Riehle.
