Helmer Hegland
Helmer K. Hegland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Hegland, was born on a farm south of Ossian on March 30, 1889. He passed away Tuesday afternoon, December 14, at a rest home in Cresco where he had been a patient for about six weeks.
The deceased had been a resident of the Ossian vicinity for many years having farmed south of Ossian most of his life and having retired from the farm to Castalia about 14 years ago. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Stavanger Lutheran Church.
He attended rural schools near his home and farmed on the Hegland place until his retirement in 1946. He lived four years in the Good Samaritan home at West Union prior to entering the rest home at Cresco.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Louis (Clara) Poeschl of Mitchell, South Dakota and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Halvor, Severt, John and Martin; three sisters, Mrs. Wm. (Olivia) Schwinefus, Mrs. Frank (Gurina) Jones, and Mrs. Melvin (Ellen) Stee.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 17, 1:30 p.m. at the Stavanger Lutheran Church near Ossian with the Rev. A. Duane Manson in charge. Burial was in the church cemetery.
