Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services were held Monday, December 12 for Mary Herman who died Friday, December 9, 1988 at the Good Samaritan Center at the age of 90 years. The Rev. James Jacobson conducted the 1:30 p.m. services held at Zalmona Presbyterian Church with burial in the Zalmona Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Brad, Brian, Brent, and Eugene Herman, Don Stewart, and Ron Winters.
Mary was born December 9, 1898 in Winneshiek County to Frederick and Wilhelmina (Stock) Grotegut. She attended rural Frankville schools and on October 17, 1918 she married Elmer R. Herman on the family farm in Winneshiek County. They farmed in Union Prairie Township until 1961 when they moved to Waukon, Iowa. Elmer died March 7, 1983. Mary had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center since July 1983. She was a member of the Zalmona Church and its UPW and Sarah Circle.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her seven brothers and sisters, John, Simon, Mabel, Martha, Lydia, Albert, and Edwin Grotegut.
Surviving are two sons Ruben Herman of Eitzen, Minnesota and Nyles Herman of Waukon, Iowa; two daughters, Marian, Mrs. Hanly Jenkins of Des Moines, Iowa and Jan, Mrs. Vernell Esch of Strawberry Point, Iowa; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a sister, Emma Henning of Waukon, Iowa.
