Virginia May Funke, 84, of 1111 K Ave NW, Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, at her home, with her family by her side. Funeral mass: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner.
Burial: St Joseph Cemetery (Cedar Rapids). A vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home where friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Virginia is survived by her seven children, William (Vicki) of Bryon, Ill., Anthony (Jan) of Delano, Minn., Paul (Kerry) of Norwalk, Barbara Funke of Cedar Rapids; Gerald (Lori) of Battle Creek, Mich., Donald (Kimberly) of Clinton, and David (Connie) of Jesup; 14 grandchildren, Jill, Greg, Nicole, Andrew, Daniel, Holly, Tina, Cassie, Kevin, Ben, Michael, Eli, Kyleigh and Aaron; one great-granddaughter, Virginia Elizabeth; a sister, Norma Arvan of Spokane, Wash.; brother-in-law, Leo Funke of Decorah; and sisters-in-law, Edna Ellickson, Cedar Rapids, and Donna (Ellickson) Chesmore of Ocala, Fla.
Virginia is also survived by special friends, Ina Mae and Eric Wienola; and neighbors, Jules and Deanne.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Louis who died on March 10, 2010; two brothers, Jim and Howard Ellickson; an infant brother; and infant sister; and an infant grandson, Christopher.
Virginia was born on May 11, 1926, in Decorah. She married Louis Funke on May 2, 1949, in Decorah, where they resided for a short time before moving to Cedar Rapids where they lived and raised their family as members of St. Jude Parish. She was very active in the Altar and Rosary Society and St. Agnes Circle. She worked for many years at United Fire and Casualty in Cedar Rapids.
Virginia enjoyed reading, crocheting, cooking and baking. She cherished the time she spent with her children and grandchildren.
Virginia and her family wish to thank Dr. Wm Wilkinson, Mercy Radiology and Dr. Lee, IBBACC Staff and Dr. Warren, Lisa, Cindy, Mindy, Scott, Carole and Sherri. The family also wishes to especially thank Ina Mae, Norma, Ginger and John Arvan. Memorials may be directed to the family.
