Hemesath, a lifetime resident of the Ossian, Iowa area, died Thursday, February 16, 1989 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, Decorah, Iowa at the age of 84. Services were held Monday, February 20, 1989 at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church. The Rev. Marvin C. Salz officiated. Debbie Scheidel was the organist. Honorary attendees were the Catholic Daughters of America Court No. 983. Casket bearers were Daniel Hageman, Clyde Kuennen, Jeffrey C. Hemesath, Kenneth Hemesath, Rodney Ollendieck, Randall Hemesath, Gary Hemesath, and Jeffrey R. Hemesath. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery, Ossian, Iowa.
Bertha was born the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Hylavachek) Scheidelmental on November 4, 1904 *Social Security Death Index listed birthdate as November 3, 1904*, in Winneshiek County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian. She received her education by attending DeSales School in Ossian.
On May 5, 1925 she married Frank H. Hemesath at St. Francis De Sales by the late Rt.Rev. Msgr. M.J. Thiltgen. They lived on a farm until 1956 when they retired. Mrs. Hemesath has been a resident of the Ossian Senior Hospice since November of 1988. She was a member of the St. Francis De Sales Catholic parish and the St. Francis Rosary Society. She also was a C.D.A. member.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984; a daughter Theresa in 1951; two sons, Charles in 1978 and Edmund in 1982; three grandsons, Bruce Hemesath, 1962, Darrell Hemesath, 1971, and Ronald Kuennen in 1985; six brothers, Earl, Rudy, Jerome, Paul, Louis Scheidel and one in infancy; and three sisters, Mrs. Ed (Etta) Hruska, Mrs. Albert (Della) Hauber, and Mrs. Henry (Alvina) Hemesath.
Survivors include five sons: Robert of West Union, Iowa, Francis of Ossian, Iowa, Mark of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ben of Phoenix, Arizona, and James of Northbrook, Illinois; three daughters, Mrs. Arnold (Lucy) Hageman of Ossian, Mrs. James (Madonna) Kuennen of Cresco, and Mrs. Gerald (Judy) Ollendieck of Ridgeway, Iowa.
