From the Mabel Tribune of 21 March 1901

David Reid -- One of the Pioneers of Hesper and a man honored and respected by all, was called home at 3 p.m. Friday. The summons came after several months of sickness and was not unexpected as he had not been conscious for about three weeks. He was 77 years of age. The funeral was held at the Friends Church, at Hesper at 2 o'clock Sunday.

Note: David's wife was Fanny Robinson, the sister of Mrs. David (Margaret) Welch and William Robinson, whom are all buried at the Hesper Public Cemetery.

David Reid was born in County Antrim, Ireland, on March 10, 1824, and died in Hesper, Iowa, March 15, 1901. He was married to Fanny Robinson March 23, 1848, and the same spring came to America. Mr. and Mrs. Reid spent about eight years in New York and then moved to Wisconsin where they lived until they came to Hesper in April, 1866, Mrs. Reid died July 81, 1883, and in October, 1884, Mr. Reid married Mrs. M. G. Halsey, who with two sons, Robinson and John C. survive him. Mr. Reid was one of those quiet but sunshiny noblemen whom all admire, and his pleasant smile and cheery greeting will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The funeral services were held at the Friends church on the 17th, and a full house gave some indication of the esteem and love which the community had for Mr. Reid, and also of the sympathy for those who mourn the loss of a dear husband and father.
