Mabel -- Harriet R. Welch, 86, of Mabel, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.

Harriet was born Feb. 2, 1924, in Dakota, Minn., to James A. and Palma J. (Hanson) Hesselgrave. In 1942 she graduated from Central High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Harriet worked for a short time at Trane in La Crosse. On July 1, 1950, she married Willard "Bill" Welch at her parents home in Dakota. Bill later passed away on Feb. 6, 1976.

She worked as a cook at the Caledonia Hospital, Elmers Supper Club, Green Lea Manor Nursing Home, and the Mabel-Canton High School.. She was member of the Mabel First Lutheran Church and enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, and attending the grandchildren's events.

Harriet is survived by five daughters, LeAnn Jevne of Mabel, Becki (Terry) Russell of Stoddard, Wisconsin, Jann (Jim) Herzog of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Jackie (Gary) Ward of Canton, and Marci (Lee) Vatland of Hayfield; daughter-in-law, Kathy Welch of Rochester; thirteen grandchildren, Paula Welch of Rochester, Will (Jill) Welch of Stewartville, John Jevne of Hesper, Iowa, Emily Crum of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Andy (Shelly) Russell of Coon Valley, Wisconsin, Polly (Lucas) Hamm of Apple Valley, Dan Russell of La Crosse, Maggie (Tim) Rauschl of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Brad Russell of Rochester, Laura Herzog of Iowa Falls, Iowa and Walker Ward of Canton; five great-grandchildren, Carmen, Christopher, Emma, Lily and Anni; and a sister-in-law, Lorriane Hesselgrave of Fridley.

Harriet was preceded in death by her husband Bill; her parents; a son, Bill; son-in-law, Bob Jevne; and a brother Henry.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel, with the Rev. Gail Klavetter officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, at the Mengis Funeral home in Mabel, and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Hesper Public Cemetery in Hesper, Iowa.

Memorials are preferred to the Mabel First Lutheran Church or the Hesper-Mabel Historical Society.
