John P. Morstad, son of Peder and Eli Pederson-Morstad died at his home on Saturday evening, April 9, at 5:30 o'clock, at the age of 74 years, 11 months, and 5 days. He was born at Oslo, Norway, coming to America at the age of 18 years, making his home for a while with his brother Tosten near Quandahl in Highland township, Winneshiek county. He worked as a farm hand around that locality, later going to the Dakotas where he worked as a farm hand for 9 years. He later followed the painting trade, working for the late H. Prastmark of Decorah for a time, and while here made his home with his sister Mrs. John Ringdahl, who passed away 28 years ago in 1886. He then purchased the farm where he lived from Elling Eide.
On March 12, 1887, he was united in marriage to Martha Eide. To this union five children were born, Ella (Mrs. Alfred A. Rognlien), Lisbon, N.D., Edgar, Quandahl, Iowa, Leonard, St. Cloud, Minn., Nellie (Mrs. A.H.Grinager), Waterloo Ridge and James on the home farm. Nine grandchildren and two sisters also survive. The funeral services were held Thursday, April 14, at one o'clock from the home and two o'clock from the Big Canoe Church. Rev. Tolo and Rev. Heltne preached eloquent sermons. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
The passing of this good man brings sorrow to the hearts of all who knew him as a good hearted, upright man in all his dealings.
