Julian Smalley, 88
Julian Edward Smalley, 88, of Spring Grove, died Friday, August 9, 2002, at Tweeten Health Services in Spring Grove. He was born November 7, 1913, on a farm in rural Mabel, MN, to James and Ellen (Brenna) Smalley and was baptized in December of 1913, at Hesper Lutheran Church. He was a lifelong area resident and never married. He attended rural school at District #3 in Hesper township, Winneshiek County, IA.
Julian was a farmer, living with his parents until their death and then continuing to live and work the family farm near Mabel until 1999. He then went to live with his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Charles Blexrud of Spring Grove. He lived there for two and a half years and then entered the Tweeten Health Care Center in October of 2001. He was a quiet, gentle man who loved his family and his farm. His resourcefulness was often seen when he would invent and make items for use on the farm. Julian loved his John Deere tractors. His generosity was often shared with family as he gave of time and talent. Julian was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove.
He is survived by one sister, Virginia (Charles) Blexrud, Spring Grove; two nieces; two great-nieces; two great-nephews; and one great-great niece.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin sister and brother, Sylvia and Loren Smalley.
Services were held Monday, August 12, 10:30 am, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove with burial in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery. Pastor Zane Anderson officiated. Friends called Sunday from 5-7 pm at the Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
