Beatrice “Bea” Schmitz, 92, of Caledonia died Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia. Beatrice Marian was born Oct. 1, 1917 on a farm in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, to Martin and Olga (Klegseth) Folstad. She went to grade school in Hesper and graduated from Mabel High School in 1936. On Aug. 18, 1938 she was united in marriage to Aloysius “Al” Schmitz at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. He preceded her in death in 1988. Bea was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, Caledonia, its Council of Catholic Women, and St. Elizabeth Society. She was also a member of the Sons of Norway, Senior Citizens, and the Granny Band. She also volunteered at Twice is Nice and Caledonia Care and Rehab. Beatrice worked at the Caledonia Bakery for five years, Reierson’s/Matt’s Clothing Store for 23 years, and Winnebago Group Home for six years. She is survived by three sons, James (Sharon) Schmitz, New Prague, Minn.; David (Betty) Schmitz, Roger (Jane) Schmitz, both of Caledonia; 18 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; one brother, Arland Folstad, Spring Grove; two sisters-in-law, Oranda Sinclair, Spring Grove, and Barbara Folstad, Decorah, Iowa. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Paul, and four brothers, Elmer, Melvin, Charles and Maynard. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Monday, April 26, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Holy Family Hall, next to St. Mary’s Church where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church Monday. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia, is assisting the family with arrangements.
