Nettie Monroe

Funeral services for Mrs. Nettie Monroe were held Tuesday, May 26, 1998 in the United Methodist Church at Castalia, IA. The Rev. Ken Seney officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia, IA.

Nettie Alice Monroe, the daughter of Charles H. and Sophia Wilhelmina (Reimers) Peschel, was born March 8, 1905 in Lampson, WI. She died Wednesday, May 23, 1998 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, IA. She had reached the age of 93 years, two months and 15 days.

She attended the school near her childhood home in Washburn County, WI. On February 25, 1924, Nettie was united in marriage with Henry James Monroe in the United Brethren Parsonage at Castalia, IA. To this union three sons were born. They lived on the family farm north of Castalia until 1967 when they retired and moved to Castalia.

Nettie took a real interest in her family, her home and lawn and was able to care for herself before she became a resident of the Good Sam Center in Postville in 1997. At the age of 80, she learned to crochet and made afghans for her family.

Nettie was a member of the Castalia United Methodist Church at Castalia and the United Methodist Women.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Monroe, her parents, Charles and Sophia; a son, Edwin, and daughter-in-law, Virginia, six grandchildren: Larry, Bobby, Patty, Wayne, Jean and Janice; a great grandson, Kory; two brothers: William Peschel and Edwin Peschel and three sisters, Clara Moriarity, Dora Elbert and Lillian Lindstrom.

Surviving are two sons, James (Marjorie) Monroe of West Union, and Henry (Lorraine) Monroe Jr., of Castalia; five grandchildren, Roberta Reckward, Connie Rothmeyer, Barb Schuchman, Becky Hanson and Cindy Grimes; 12 great grandchildren, Jeanne, Richard, Gary, Renae and Tyler, Nicole and Jessie, Tim, Chris and Dusty, Ben and Alex; one great great granddaughter, Jessica; a sister, Anna Beron of Duluth, MN; and several nieces and nephews.

Casket bearers were Forest Monroe, John Frederick, Larry Brockway, Virgil Reckward, Douglas Buddenberg and Charles Thorson.
