Hedvig Kirsten Kloster
Hedvig Kloster, 84, of Decorah, died March 14, 2001 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.
There was no visitation, as the body was cremated.
Memorial services were held Sunday, March 18 at 2 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Rev. Joan Mau officiating.
Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handled arrangements.
Hedvig Kirsten Kloster was born May 10, 1916 in Minneapolis, Minn., a daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. C. S. Thorpe. Rev. Thorpe was the pastor at Hope Lutheran Church in southeast Minneapolis.
Hedvig Kloster had four sisters: Solvig, Dorthea, Eldrid and Katherine.
She attended John Marshall High School and graduated in 1934.
Her first job was teaching Kindergarten and music. She taught in Amery, Wis., and Winthrop, Minn.
In 1940 she married Clair Kloster.
From 1941 to 1945 she was a Navy wife living in Norfolk, Va., New York, Chicago, Annapolis, Md., and Seattle, Wash.
She moved to Decorah in 1946.
Hedvig Kloster was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, bible School and served on many church committees.
She obtained her bachelor's degree from Luther College in 1961 and taught first grade at John Cline School in Decorah.
She was active in many community affairs and helped to organize the Depot Outlet Clothing store.
Among the many activities she enjoyed were entertaining, collecting sea shells, reading, making Norwegian dolls, creating pressed flower cards, attending musical events at Luther College and appreciating the beauties of nature.
Survivors include one son, Stephen and Moira Kloster of Langley, British Columbia and one daughter, Ingrid and Dan Koch of Ellsworth, Maine.
