Dorothy Spalding

Dorothy Spalding, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 at Northbrook Manor Care Center following an extended illness.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, with Rev. John Gossman officiating.

Burial will be held Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Rock Island, Illinois.

Stewart Funeral Home of Marion will handle arrangements.

Dorothy L. Spalding was born August 2, 1911 in Sterling, Illinois, the daughter of Harvey and Edna (Lawton) Barrett.

She married Martin Virgil Spalding on Nov. 25, 1935 in Clinton, lowa. He died in 1984.

Dorothy attended St. Joseph Catholic Church with her daughter and family. She attended the University of Illinois, then taught school for several years.

Dorothy and Virgil Spalding owned and operated the Decorah Laundry and Cleaners before moving to Dallas, Texas, where she managed an apartment complex until their retirement back to the Midwest.

Survivors include a daughter Julie and Herb Stufflebeam of Marion; a brother, Barry Spalding and special friend Linda of Lost Nation, Iowa; a brother, William Barrett of Dallas, Texas; eight grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Dorothy L. Spalding was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; a sister Maxine Neylon and a grandson.
