Wil Kuhlman

Wil Kuhlman, 87, of Decorah, died of natural causes on Dec. 7, 2000 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, where he had been a resident since the spring of 2000.

Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Deborah, with Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen officiating.

There is no visitation, as the body was cremated. Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah is handling arrangements.

A luncheon reception for friends and family will follow in the church parlors.

Wil Kuhlman was born on Sept. 14, 1913 in Forest Park, Illinois to August and Lena (Peth) Kuhlman and was baptized and confirmed at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Forest Park.

At St. John, he was an active participant in the life of the parish, including membership in the senior choir and serving as deacon and chairman of the board.

In 1941, he married Dorothy Louise Schiller of Oak Park, Illinois.

Wil's career at the Rockwood Company Insurance brokerage house in Chicago's financial district spanned 40 years as partner, office manager, and executive vice-president.

During his career at Rockwood, the family moved to River Forest, Illinois, where Wil served the community as Fire Commissioner and Trustee of the Village. He rigorously pursued his hobby of collecting and restoring his antique automobile with his sons, and was a member of the Chicagoland Model T Ford Club and the Antique Automobile Club of America. He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church River Forest as well as the Union League Club of Chicago.

In 1974, Wil and his wife, "Dee" moved to Decorah, where he was happily retired for the past 26 years, participating as a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Decorah Rotary Club.

Wil Kuhlman is remembered for his loving devotion to his two sons, Charles of New York City and William and Yvonne of Decorah, and for his dedication to his wife of 58 years.

He is also survived by five grandchildren.

Wil Kuhlman was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Clair.
