The Winneshiek Co. connection isn't apparent in this obituary, but because it appeared in a Decorah paper, there most certainly is a connection. If anyone can provide Lyle Melvin Flaskerud's tie to Winneshiek Co., please contact wwaters13@comcast.net so the information can be added to this obit.

Lyle Flaskerud

Lt. Col. Lyle Flaskerud, 75, died Nov. 25, 2000 at the Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell, Mont.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Nov. 30 at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Tim Bartholomew of the Stillwater Free Lutheran Church officiating. Military Honors will be by the United Veterans of the Flathead.

Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Mortuary & Crematory.

Lyle Melvin Flaskerud was born on June 16, 1925 in La Porte City, Iowa to Melvin Lawrence and Thelma (Teeter) Flaskerud. He received his education in Iowa, graduating from high school before serving his country as a Bomber Pilot during WWII.

Upon returning from war Lyle Flaskerud attended the University of Iowa and the University of Tennessee, graduating with a bachelor's degree.

He met and married Marcella Sauter Hoeppner in Lubback, Texas, on Sept. 15, 1951.

Lyle Flaskerud rejoined the military, attending pilot's training at Reese A.F.B. He became a member of the Strategic Air Command, flying both B29's and B47's.

He worked his way through the ranks and at his retirement was the Chief of the Air Force Transportation Systems Division, at the Pentagon. He was awarded several medals, including the Air Force Commendation Medal and
the Bronzed Star.

After his retirement Lyle Flaskerud enjoyed traveling the country with his wife and fishing. He also enjoyed making wooden toys.

He is survived by one sister, Mary Jane Stanhope and Fay of Janesville, and two brothers, Russell Flaskerud of Waterloo and Donald Flaskerud of Aurora, Colo.

Lyle Melvin Flaskerud was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella, in Oct. of this year, his parents and one brother.
