Funeral services for Ethel Meyer were held Monday, March 16, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Iowa, with the Rev. David Lenth officiating. Marlys Hager provided the music. Schmitz Funeral Home of Ossian was in charge of arrangements. Internment was held at Hillside Cemetery in Ossian, Iowa.

Ethel Caroline Minnie Meyer of Ossian, Iowa, died Thursday, March 12, 1998 at her home in Ossian after a lingering illness. She was 90 years old.

She was born the daughter of Charles F. and Ida A. (Sander) Schutte on April 2, 1907 in rural Luana, Iowa. She was baptized, May 14, 1907, and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. Ethel obtained an education by attending the Luana Consolidated Schools at Luana.

On February 6, 1929 she was joined in marriage to Lawrence G. Meyer. The ceremony took place in her parents home. The couple farmed the Meyer family farm, one mile north of Ossian from 1929 to 1963, after which they retired into the town of Ossian.

Ethel was a member of the Zion Luther Church, Castalia, Iowa; its Rebecca Circle; WELCA; and KEWS. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting flowers, gardening and traveling extensively here and abroad. For the past ten years, she was an active participant in the Feedsack Fashions Program sponsored by the Bloomfield Historical Society.

Survivors include three sons: John C. (Elaine) Meyer of Northwood, IA, Lawrence D. (Lorraine) Meyer and Marvin (Janice) Meyer, all of Ossian; two daughters: Mary (Harold) Haberichter of Clever, MO and LaRue (Wayne) Anfinson of Waucoma, IA.

Also surviving are 11 grandsons: John D. Meyer, Laverne Meyer, Marcus Haberichter, David Haberichter, Nathan Haberichter, Byron Anfinson, Craig Anfinson, Kevin Meyer, Kent Meyer, Kyle Meyer and Jonathan Meyer; 12 granddaughters: Rebecca Schmuecker, Elizabeth Billmeyer, Anneliese Schneider, Angela Glenn, Rhonda Boe, Janelle Christopherson, Cheryl Minor, Lori Smith, Julie Neuzil, Karen Humpal, Kendra Shroyer and Jacqueline Portz; and 45 great grandchildren; and five sisters-in-law: Margaret Schutte of San Diego, CA, Mabel Schutte of Prairie du Chien, WI, Esther Schutte of Postville, IA, Marjorie Schutte of Decorah, IA, and Viola Stevens of Minneapolis, MN.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Lawrence on July 29, 1970; one great grandson, Jared Meyer; a son-in-law, Melvern Boe; a sister, Doris Schutte, five brothers, Arthur, Harry, Charles, Robert and Ruben Schutte; and a sister-in-law Florence Schutte.

Casket bearers were her grandsons and honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters.
