Sophie Emilie Wilhelmine Wacker

Sophie Emilie Wilhelmine Wacker, 94, of Waukon, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m., at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with the Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating.

Casket bearers were James, Glen, Paul, Dale, Ray, Tom and Andy Wacker.

Burial was at the East Side Cemetery in Elkader. The Martin Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Sophie (Mueller) Wacker was born Jan. 4, 1905, in Clayton Center, the daughter of George F. and Alvina C. (Wilke) Mueller. She was confirmed at the Lutheran Church in St. Olaf and attended schools in the area.

On March 14, 1926, she married Andrew E. Wacker in Elkader. They farmed in the Elkader and Monona areas before moving to rural Waukon in 1942. They farmed in Union Prairie Township until 1965.

Sophie was active in all aspects of the farm work. She enjoyed flower gardening and needlework, as well as reading the Bible and traveling. Her family was very important to her.

She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon.

Survivors include six daughters, Laura and Raymond Herrmann of Mountain Home, Ark., Louise and Donald Schneberger of Waterloo, Alice Schlacke of Waterville, Ruth and Paul Willar of Maple Grove, Minn., Esther Hemme of Zumbrota, Minn., and Sally and Robert Livingston of Dallas, Texas; and five sons, James and Margaret Wacker of Waukon, Glen and Rachel Wacker of Cedar Rapids, Paul and Lou Wacker of Perry, Dale and Connie Wacker of Pamell, and Ray and Shirley Wacker of Boscobel, Wis.

Other survivors include a sister, Greta Bruns of DECORAH; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Wacker of Hiawatha; a sister-in-law, Viola Mueller of St. Olaf; 38 grandchildren; and 59 great grandchildren.

Sophie Wacker was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Andrew, three sons, Eldo, Fred and Ralph; five sisters, Emma Havelick, Alma Leuchtenmacher, Louise Dorman, Alvina Landt and Amanda Dennler; four brothers, William, Arnold, Henry and Helmut Mueller, a son-in-law, Ronald Schlacke; and three grandchildren.
