Norman W. Noecker
Norman W. Noecker, 87, of Decorah, died Wednesday, Nov. 10 1999, at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m., at Decorah Lutheran Church, with the Revs. James Glesne and Ole Winter officiating.
Diane Kvamme was the organist. The congregation sang "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," "Abide with Me" and "Onward, Christian Soldiers."
Casket bearers were Michael Benzing, Mitchell Benzing, Nicole Benzing, Ryan Holmes, Vicki Perez and Colin Rooney.
Burial with full military rites was at the Russell Cemetery. Rites were given by Helof-Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977 and Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163.
Norman, the son of Earnest Leo and Christine (Clausen) Noecker, was born Jan. 26, 1912, in Decorah. He graduated from Decorah High School.
He was in the United States Army during World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy.Norman was married to Lillian E. Johnson Jan. 15, 1942, in Rochester, Minn.
Norman was an auto mechanic, repairing cars at Weis Buick and Varner's. Then he worked at Decorah Community Schools in the bus garage. He also farmed.
He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and enjoyed fishing. Norman also was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church.
He had been a resident at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility since Sept. 21, 1995.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian; one daughter, Kristi and Dennis Benzing of Decorah; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Vicki Perez of Decorah and daughters Samantha and Cheyenne, Michael Benzing of Marquette, Mitchell and Heather Benzing of Iowa Falls, and Nicole Benzing of Madison, Wis.; and one brother, Melvin and Myrtle Noecker of Decorah.
Norman Noecker was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Karen J. Noecker, who died Nov. 7, 1984; four brothers, Melvin William, Clifford and wife Eunice, Leonard and wife, Beatrice, and Arthur and wife Ingeborg; and by one sister, Esther Riste and husband Adolph.
