Agnes Mildred Spilde

Agnes Mildred Spilde, 92, of Decorah, died Sunday, June 17, 2001 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 20 at 11 a.m. at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church with Rev. Kim Smith officiating.

Casket bearers were David Estrem, Scott Estrem, Jon Estrem, Brad Estrem, Todd Estrem, Brent Estrem and Shawn Estrem.

Her grandson David Estrem read a Eulogy. Organist was Paul Bruvold, and the congregation sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "Amazing Grace" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."

Burial was in Springfield Lutheran Cemetery with Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handling arrangements.

Agnes Nelson was born Aug. 29, 1908 in Pleasant Township to Charles and Elisa (Rustad) Nelson.

She attended rural schools of Winneshiek County. Her early years were spent near Big Canoe, and at 12 years of age, she moved to Nordness to work in her father's store.

She married Telford Estrem March 19, 1929 at Springfield Lutheran Church. He died Oct. 1966.

She married Andrew Spilde Aug. 29, 1984, her 76 birthday, at First Lutheran Church. He died March 27,1998.

After her marriage to Telford Estrem, she was active in Springfield Lutheran Church activities. Many hard but enjoyable years were spent on the farm until she moved to Decorah.

In Decorah, she worked at the Decorah Greenhouse, Dr. Howland's office, the cleaners, the Aase Haugen Care Center and the Winneshiek County Hospital.

She assisted several people in their homes, making their meals, reading to them and being a friend. She also enjoyed painting and did needlework and was a member of Washington Prairie Lutheran Church and its Circle and Ladies Aid, and collected for Easter Seals.

She had been a resident of Aase Haugen Home since July 21, 1995.

Agnes Spilde will always be remembered for her smile and for her willingness to try just about anything.

Survivors include her son, Lyle and Kathy Estrem of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; one step-son, Robert and Sonja Spilde of Ramsey, Minn.; two daughters-in-law, Aileen of Tulsa, OK and Helen of Pequot Lakes, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Additional survivors include six sisters: Evelyn Haugen of Decorah; Bea Paulson of Waterloo; Gladys Hicken of Orem, Utah; Mario Fritz of Roseville, Minn.; Florence Lynch of Decorah and Darlyne Rugland of Kalispell, Mont.

Agnes Mildred Spilde was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, two sons, Arland on March 1, 1981 and Duane on June 11, 1997; a brother, Charles Nelson and a sister, Clarice Hexom Gilbertson.

Decorah- Agnes M. Spilde, 92, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, in Aase Haugen Home after a short illness. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, by the Rev. Kim Smith. Burial: Springfield Lutheran Cemetery, rural Decorah. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah, and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Survivors include a son, Lyle Estrem of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; a stepson, Robert of Ramsey, Minn.; and six sisters, Evelyn Haugen and Florence Lynch, both of Decorah, Bea Paulson of Waterloo, Gladys Hicken of Orem, Utah, Marion Fritz of Roseville, Minn., and Darlyne Rugland of Kalispell, Mont.
