Irene Thompson
Irene Thompson, 84, of Decorah, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m., at Decorah Lutheran Church, with the Revs. James Glesne and Ole Winter officiating.
Alan Sensor will be the organist. Soloist Marcia Murray will sing "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art." Congregational hymns will be "Rock of Ages" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
Casket bearers will be Eric Snyder, Hank Snyder, Jim Tangeman, Ron Tangeman, Butch Thompson and Chris Thompson. Honorary bearers will be the rest of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Burial will be at Union Prairie Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Visitation will be held at Fjelstul's Thursday, Aug. 24, from 4-8 p.m., and at the church Friday after 10 a.m.
Irene (Anderson) Thompson was born April 8, 1916, in Clarkfield, Minn., daughter of August and Julia (Riste) Anderson. She was baptized April 30, 1916, in Clarkfield, Minn.
Her family later moved to Decorah, where she attended school. Irene was confirmed June 16, 1929, at Decorah Lutheran Church by the Rev. O. Glesne.
Irene was married to Nathan John Thompson Feb.. 1, 1938.
She worked as a nurse's aide at the County Home for 26 years. She was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church.
Irene enjoyed embroidery work and was recognized for her volunteer work, sewing for bazaars at the County Home, making quilts, towels and more.
She liked gardening and flowers. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include one daughter, Julia "Judy" Snyder of Decorah; one son, Ernest and Linda Thompson of Cresco; one son-in-law, Bob Tangeman of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Irene Thompson was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Karen Tangeman, who died Jan. 4, 2000; three brothers, Ernie, Clifford and Eddie; one sister, Gladys Anderson; and one grandson, Nick Nathan Thompson, who died June 11, 1966.
