Lloyd Willard Larson

Lloyd Larson, 76, of Decorah, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at Caledonia Lutheran nursing home in Caledonia, Minn, after a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 28, at 11 a.m., at Highland Lutheran Church, rural Spring Grove, Minn., with the Rev. David Andreae officiating.

Organist was Shirley Groth. Soloists were Greg Wennes and Brenda Gullickson.

Casket bearers were Tilferd Bjerke, Ron Bjerke, Jeremy Bjerke, Lyle Bjerke, Donavon Larson, Bill Musser, Merlin Halverson and Harold Bjerke.

Interment was in the Highland Lutheran Cemetery. French and Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Lloyd Willard Larson was born July 3, 1923, at home on a farm in Highland Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Henry 0. and Nora (Vinji) Larson. He was baptized at confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church.

Lloyd attended the Grindeland School through the eighth grade and was also a member of 4-H.

He worked at home on the farm in Highland Township, and did farm work all his life.

When he retired, he moved into Decorah and lived with his sister Marian Thomann until she died on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1995.

Lloyd was a lifelong member of Highland Lutheran Church.

In October, 1996, when cancer was discovered, Lloyd moved to the nursing home in Caledonia, Minn., intending to stay just for the winter. With the coming of spring, the cancer had begun to spread, so he decided to remain at the nursing home. He moved into the Roseview Court area, which was more of an independent living area. As the cancer began to take its toll, Lloyd moved back to the nursing care area of the Caledonia Nursing Home.

Lloyd never married, but he thoroughly enjoyed his family of nephews and nieces and their children. Among the pallbearers were Lloyd's oldest and youngest great-nephews, Merlin Halverson and Jeremy Bjerke.

Survivors include one sister, Stella Bjerke of Spring Grove, Minn., several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews and a special friend, Pemalla Twite of Caledonia, Minn.

Lloyd Larson was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Norman and Lucille Larson and Herbert and Irene Larson; and a sister Marian Thomann.
