Gladys Vine

Gladys Vine, 90, of Decorah, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 2, at 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen officiating.

Pastor Marion Miller will be the organist. The congregation will sing "Faith of Our Fathers," "Nearer My God to Thee," and "Amazing Grace."

Pallbearers are Arlin R. Arneson, William McClain, Earlen Arneson, Alvin Vine, David Haugen and Darrell Vine.

Interment will be at the Union Prairie Lutheran Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Gladys Idelli (Arneson) Vine was born Dec. 27, 1908, in Canoe Township in Winneshiek County, the daughter of John J. and Guro "Julia" (Jaastad) Arneson. She was baptized and confirmed at Big Canoe Lutheran Church.

She graduated from Decorah High School in 1928, and received her teaching certificate from the Normal Training program.

Gladys married Clifford A. Vine June 17, 1931, at First Lutheran Church. They had two children.

After high school, Gladys taught for three years in the rural schools. She and Clifford farmed all their lives in Canoe Township.

Gladys was active in Hauge Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. She also was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

In June, 1997, Gladys moved to Aase Haugen Home.

Survivors include one daughter, Jeanette and James O. Thompson of Decorah; and one daughter-in-law, Donna Vine of Decorah.

Also surviving are ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Gladys Vine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford, who died June 4, 1997; one son, Roger, who died December 17, 1991;
four brothers, Bennie Arneson, Julian Arneson, Leonard Arneson and Walter Arneson; and one sister, Florence Headington.
