Helen P. Slebiska

Helen P. Slebiska, 87, of Princeton, Minn., and formerly of Calmar and Fort Atkinson, died at the Elim Home in Princeton Tuesday, March 23, 1999.

There will be a memorial mass at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Princeton, Minn., Saturday, April 10, with the Rev. Mark Willenbring officiating.

The Williams-Hanson-Kaun Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Helen (Poupe) Slebiska was born Dec. 19, 1911, at Fort Atkinson, the daughter of Anton and Antonette "Nettie" (Maresh) Poupe. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Catholic Church. She grew up in Fort Atkinson and received her education there.

Helen married James G. Slebiska Feb. 10, 1931, in St. John's Catholic Church.

The couple moved to Calmar, where they raised their family. In 1995, Helen moved to Princeton to be close to family.

Helen was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. She belonged to its Rosary Society and to the Oneota Auxiliary in Decorah.
She enjoyed time spent with family and friends. Her specialty was the baking of all types of Czechoslovakian foods, including kolaches.

Her hobbies included collecting books and poetry. She had a beautiful garden and flower beds. She also enjoyed music and played the accordion and the electric organ.

Survivors include her husband, James, a resident at the Oneota Riverview Care Center in Decorah; two sons, Reginald and Joan Slebiska of Hastings, Minn., and James Slebiska Jr. of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; one daughter, Helen June and Jerry Mark of Princeton, Minn.; one grandchild; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Adele Marik of New Hampton; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Helen Slebiska was preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters, Emma Poupe, Clara Lang and Celia Griffith.
