Lloyd Barness

Lloyd Barness, 61, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis., after a long illness.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 19, at 11 a.m., at the Bethany Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Richard Vettrus officiating.

Soloists were Larry Johansen, accompanied by Linda Johansen, and
Tom Kleppe.

Casket bearers were John Zweibohmer, Bryan Gerleman, Cory Gerleman, Berry Gerleman, Gary Barness, Kris Barness, Troy Barness and Layne
Meyer.

Honorary bearers were Karl Zweibohmer, Richard Kleppe, Wayne Barness, Wayne Sutler, Conley Meyer and Bob Lloyd.

Interment was at the West Union Cemetery. The Burnham-Wood Funeral Home of West Union handled arrangements.

Lloyd was born May 25, 1937, in Winneshiek County, the son of John and Gladys (Kleppe) Barness. He was baptized at Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church. He attended Ossian Public School.

On June 14, 1958, Lloyd was united in marriage to Shirley Ash at Bethany Lutheran Church and to this union two children were born, Lee and Barbara.

The couple farmed until 1965, when they moved to West Union. Most of Lloyd's career was spent hauling milk, until he retired in 1992.

He enjoyed driving race cars and later became a track official at the West Union race track. He also enjoyed playing cards and all kinds of sports.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; his son, Lee and Jeannie Barness of West Union; his daughter, Barbara and Brian Schroeder of West Union; five grandchildren, Ryan, Kathryn and Jennifer Barness, and Scott and Steven Schroeder; one brother, Murvel and Cindy Barness of Waukon; three sisters, Sharon (Mrs. Keith) Butterfield of Sylmar, Calif., Joyce (Mrs. Rick) Villemaire, of Riverview, Fla., and Janet (Mrs. Mike) Gerleman of Creston; and nieces and nephews.

Lloyd Barness was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gordon and Clifford.
