Clarence Oliver Kleppe, 92, died Friday, March 26, 1999, at the Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 30, by the Rev. Richard Vettrus at the Bethany Lutheran Church of rural Ossian at 1 p.m.
The Rev. Dick Speight gave the sermon. John Nollsch sang a solo and the congregation also sang hymns.
Casket bearers were Kenneth Weber, David Yeager, Chris Hoffert, Jerry Wilke, Casey Hoffert and Lee Wiskus.
Burial was in the church cemetery. The Burnham-Wood Funeral Home of West Union handled arrangements.
Clarence was born Jan. 1, 1907, in Fayette County, near West Union, the son of Ole and Tressie (Svennes) Kleppe. He was baptized at Stavanger Lutheran Church near Ossian and later confirmed his faith at Stavanger Oct. 21, 1921.
He attended rural school through seventh grade.
On Nov. 7, 1931, Clarence was united in marriage to'Clara Reinertson at her sister's home in Waterloo. To this union three children were born.
Clarence farmed near West Union until 1956. Because of health problems, he quit farming and moved to West Union. In 1958, he started working at the West Union Country Club and was there until 1982.
He continued to live in his home until March 29, 1996, when he moved
to the Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point.Survivors include one son, Arnold and Merilee Kleppe of Floris and formerly of Calmar; one daughter, Thelma and Don Wilke of Elkader; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. They include Melanie and John Nollsch, Jamin and Adam; Kimberly, and Dick Speight, Emily and Daniel; Kamala and David Yeager, Michael, Ben, Collin, Joel and Samuel; Loyce and Chris Hoffert, Casey, Kylie, Jason and Jordann; Corinne Kleppe; Jerry and Denise Wilke, Matthew and Kendra; Jean and Lee Wiskus, Stephanie and Shelley; Lois and Kenneth Weber, Stacey and Kyle; Debbie Wilke; Donna and Michael Hammer, Rachael and Diana; Duane Kleppe; and David Kleppe.
Clarence Kleppe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Clara, who died in March of 1986; a son, Clarion Thomas, who died in October of 1963; four brothers; six sisters; and two great-grandsons.
