Nellie Donlan

Nellie Donlan, 94, of Decorah, died Monday, May 15, 2000, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 18, at 10 a.m., at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Alan Sensor will be the organist. Soloist will be Joan Schissel. Selections will be "On Eagle's Wings," "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," "Ave Maria," "Here I Am Lord" and "Alleluia, Alleluia, Let the Holy Anthem Rise."

Casket bearers will be Patrick Donlan, Gary Donlan, Joseph Schmitz, Robert Schmitz, Michael Schmitz, David Schmitz and Lee Donlan.

Burial will be at St. Bridget's Cemetery in Bluffton. The French & Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Nellie (Henry) Donlan was born Jan. 13, 1906, on a farm in Canoe Township of Winneshiek County, the daughter of Thomas J. and Anna T. (Madden) Henry.

She attended Notre Dame Catholic School in Cresco.

Nellie was married to Francis Donlan in November of 1930 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Bluffton. They farmed east of the Orleans Church.

After her husband died, Nellie ran the farm until the children had grown and then moved to Decorah, where she worked for Luther College in food service for 18 years.

Nellie enjoyed needlework and reading.

Survivors include one daughter, Elaine and Kenny Schmitz, Ellicott City, Md.; two sons, Marvin and Jean Donlan of Bloomington, Minn., and Clem Donlan of Lime Springs; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, John Henry of Decorah; one sister-in-law, Mary Henry of Decorah; and several nieces and nephews.

Nellie Donlan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis, who died in 1951; one sister, Stella Henry; and three brothers, Miles, Richard and Jim Henry.
