Marjorie Fern (Ralston) Schutte

Marjorie Schutte, 77, of Decorah, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 17, at 11 a.m., at Decorah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. James Glesne officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Tim Tostengard. The Rev. Ole Winter led the family in prayer prior to the service. The organist was Diane Kvamme.

Casket bearers were Marjorie's grandsons and the honorary bearers were her granddaughters.

Interment was at the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville handled arrangements.

Marjorie Fern (Ralston) Schutte was born Feb. 9, 1922, on the home farm of her parents, Earl John and Phoena Ann (Evans) Ralston, in Franklin Township of Allamakee County, near Waukon.

She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia. She attended the Franklin School No. 9 and graduated from Waukon High School.

On Jan. 17, 1947, Marjorie was married to Ruben Carl Schutte in St. John Lutheran Church at Luana, by the Rev. Paul Adix. To this union five children were born.

They lived in Luana and Waukon for a short time, and then moved to the Ossian and Castalia area, where they farmed for 42 years. They moved to Decorah in 1991.

Marjorie collected coins and stamps. She made quilts for her family. She had made a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren, and was working on the ones for the great-grandchildren when she became ill.

Marjorie became a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church in 1992 and was a member of the Women of the ELCA. She also belonged to Tuesday Club.

Survivors include her children, Linda and Merlin Crain of Cresco, Kathryn and Lyle Tollefson of Decorah, Dean and Jeanne Schutte of Caledonia, Minn., and Marsha and Roger Phillips of Decorah.

Twenty grandchildren survive. They are Janetta (Alan) Taylor of Cresco; Sandra (Troy) Bull of Mason City; Michael (Karla) Crain, Michelle Crain, Jeremy Tollefson, Brenda (Richard) Spilde, Valerie Tollefson and Tammy (Lee)Tangen, all of Decorah; David Schutte of Ames; James, Joshua, Jennifer, Jacob and Jonathan Schutte, all of Caledonia, Minn.; Matthew Schutte, Heather (Rick) Webb of Loveland, Colo.; and Nicholle, Travis, Lance and Shalane Phillips, all of Decorah.

The 13 great-grandchildren are Tiffany and Nicholas Taylor; Jonathon, Ryan and Charles Crain; Desiree Tollefson, Destiny Tollefson, Dallas Ellefson, Lynsey, Bret and Tory Tangen, Laen Folsum and Cheyanne Schutte.

Also surviving are brothers Gerald and Nancy Ralston of Escondido, Calif., Dale Ralston of Lenexa, Kan., Leon and Pauline Ralston of Dubois, Wyo.; and sisters Roberta and William Livingood of Waukon; and Lucille and Wilburt Topel of Milwaukee, Wis.

Marjorie Schutte was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ruben, who died in 1992; a son, Charles "Chuck" Schutte, who died Sept. 14, 1998; two sisters, Beulah Livingood and Helen Gelo; and a brother, Curtis Ralston.
