Marie Lutkenhaus

Marie Lutkenhaus, 91, of Festina died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at the Mercy Health Care Hospital in New Hampton after a short illness.

Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolars Catholic Church in Festina, officiated by Msgri Cletus Hawes.

Music was provided by Alan Sensor, organist, and Our Lady of Seven Dolars Choir.

Casket bearers were Kevin Busta, Mark Patrick, Andrew Morris, Timothy Franzen; Christopher Davis and David Lutkenhaus.

Interment was in the church cemetery, with Ossian Funeral Chapel handling the arrangements.

Marie Elizabeth Lutkenhaus was born on April 1, 1909, near Ossian, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Beckman) Ehler. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, and attended St. Francis DeSales Catholic School.

She married Gregory Lutkenhaus on Oct. 27, 1936 at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church. During her married life, she lived in Festina. The last three years, she lived with her daughter, JoAnn Franzen.

Marie Lutkenhaus was a wonderful seamstress and cook, and enjoyed playing Euchre, gardening and quilting. She never missed a Cubs baseball game.

She was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolars Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and the Festina Senior Citizen's Group.

Surviving Marie Lutkenhaus are six daughters: Shirley and Lewis Morris of Cedar Rapids; Donna Mae and William Davis of Cedar Rapids; Karen and Bernie Busta of Waucoma; Mary Jo Busta; Tom and Suzanne Busta; Barb Wharton of Lakewood, Colo; Lavohne and Dean Patrick of West Union and JoAnn and LeRoy Franzen of Fort Atkinson; one son John and LuAnn Lutkenhaus of Cedar Rapids and one sister, Irene Franzen of Winona, Minn.

Additional survivors include 38 grandchildren: Sarah and Nathan Morrow; David and Chris Lutkenhaus; Rebecca Lutkehhaus; Andrew Morris; Lynann and Martin Panchula; Chris and Patty Davis; Bob and Ben Davis; Shelley Elliot; Diana and Todd Burken; Nancy Turner; Cindy Busta; Kevin Busta; Sharon Busta; Jennifer, Anna and Jeremy Wharton; Mark, Marie, Joan, Richard and Roger Patrick; Deborah and Jim Shults; Cathy and Scott Steffen; Marilyn and Rick Nesbitt; Tim and Connie Franzen; Pat Franzen; Keith and Robin Franzen; Jean and Mike Everhart; Dan Franzen; Dean and Nancy Franzen; and Michael, Scott, Beth, Julie and Greg Franzen.

Also surviving Marie Lutkenhaus are 28 great-grandchildren: Johnathan, Jacob, Justin, Lauren, Jared, Caleb, Payton, Mason ,Nicholle, Anthony, Greg, Zachary, Aaron, Elijah, Jodeci, Tom, Brad, Ann Marie, Sarah, Mark, Megan, Caleb, Deyin, Eric, Nathan, Nicolas, Nicole and Hailey.

Five sisters-in-law also survive: Sister Julia Lutkenhaus of Dubuque; Leona Krull of Jesup; Ethel Lutkenhaus of Alta Vista, Iowa; Marie Ehler of Harmony, Minn, and Nellie Ehler of Shepherd, Mich.

Marie Elizabeth Lutkenhaus was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gregory Lutkenhaus in 1980, a granddaughter, Tina Wharton; a great-grandson, Matthew Nesbitt, and five brothers, Alfred, Victor, Bernard, Ralph and Jerome Ehler.
