Arthur Bruess

Arthur Bruess, 71, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at his home.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at 10:30 a.m., at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, with the Rev. Allen Schmitt presiding. The Rev. Msgr. L.H. Reicks, the Rev. Donald Hawes and the Rev. Robert Hirsch concelebrated.

Verda Mikota was the organist. Singers were Harlan Mikota and Colleen Busta. Guitar soloist was Katie Holthaus. Lector was Ron Jirak. Eucharistic minister was Lori Huinker. Mass servers were Jacob and Dalton Bruess, and Michael Soukup. Gift bearers were Jamie and Kurt Jirak, and Jason Reiseck.

Casket bearers were Donald Bruess Jr., Ron Franzen, Brian Bruess, Wayne Franzen, Ivan Bullerman, Gerry Bruess, Gary Bruess and Rodney Lensing.

Burial was at the church cemetery. The Conway Funeral Home of Cresco handled arrangements.

Art was born Nov. 16, 1927, on a farm near St. Lucas, the son of John and Caroline (Bodensteiner) Bruess. He attended school in St. Lucas and grew up in this area.

He was a United States Army veteran having served from 1945-47. On Nov. 22, 1949, Art married Irene Huinker of Festina.

He farmed and sold Farm Bureau Insurance near Protivin until 1965, when he started Art's Milling Service Inc. in Protivin. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post No. 605.

His favorite hobbies were golfing, fishing, working in his wood shop and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Irene, of Protivin; two sons, Larry and Rosie Bruess of Protivin, and Randy and Zita Bruess of Protivin; eight daughters, Donna and Doug Reiseck of Waterloo, Diane and Bill Sullivan of Protivin, Kathy Jirtik and friend Bill Ryan of Protivin, Janice Hansmeier of Protivin, Connie and Keith Lukes of Protivin, Susan Bruess of Garnavillo, Betty and Doug Soukup of Spillville, and Cindy and Steve King of Mason City; 15 grandsons; eight granddaughters; two sisters, Alice Bullerman of Waterloo and Arlene Lensing of Calmar; and two brothers, Donald Bruess of Ridgeway and Clarence Bruess of Monroe, Wis.

Art Bruess was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Lawrence John in infancy; two sisters, Wilma Franzen and Lucille Lechtenberg; and three brothers, John, Cornell and James.
