Melvin A. Borseth

Melvin A. Borseth, 83, of Decorah, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville following a short illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Stephen Jacobsen officiating.

Casket bearers were Jack, Eric, Andy, Jon, Tim, Joe and Jeff Borseth; Joe Helgeson and Harlan Nesset.

Burial was at the Greenwood Cemetery, Castalia. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Melvin was born Feb. 7, 1916, in Glenwood Township of Winneshiek County, the son of Edmund and Ora (Steele) Borseth. He attended country school in Glenwood Township.

He farmed near Frankville and married Violet Moore**. To this union a son, Lyle, was born.

Melvin then moved to Arizona and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 34 years, retiring as a conductor.

He married Bertha Ray in Arizona and to this union two children were born, Jack and Beverly.

He later married Clara Tucker and after she died, he moved back to the Decorah area. Melvin then married Helen Halvorson Dec. 29, 1990, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

Melvin was a member of First Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Borseth of Decorah; one son, Jack and Pat Borseth of Arizona; one daughter, Beverly and Terry Grittman of Chandler, Ariz.; one sister, Norma Brandt of Decorah; one daughter-in-law, Valerie Borseth of Ridgeway, numerous great grandchildren; two step-daughters, Janice Helgeson of Spillville and Pauline Tucker of California; and two step-sons, Millard and Vivian Tucker of Arizona and Harlan and Norma Nesset of Arizona.

Melvin Borseth was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Violet** and Clara; one son, Lyle, who died in January of 1995; step-daughter Melba; two brothers, Vernon in infancy and Duward; and four sisters, Ruby in infancy, and Mildred, Viola and Leona.
