Ole Albert Flatland was born April 10, 1913, in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Ole H. and Hilda (Lykkebo-Hanson) Flatland.

He was baptized June 22, 1913, by the Rev. Scarvie and confirmed April 29, 1928, by the Rev. Brevik at Glenwood Lutheran Church. He attended rural schools in Winneshiek and Allamakee counties.

At the age of 11, he and other siblings began working for area farmers, working in the fields with horse-drawn equipment and bringing home meager earnings for his family.

One of Ole's employers enjoyed telling how Ole managed to have chore duties a certain time of day, close to a road where his future bride walked on her way to and from teaching a rural school.

On June 1, 1941, Ole was united in marriage with Anna K. Hoines at Fremont Lutheran Church, rural Cresco. To this union six children were born — Judy, Duane, LuAnn, Orabel, Raymond and Gary.

The family farmed in the Ridgeway and Decorah areas until retirement, then moved to Decorah in 1984. They took bus tours to almost every state and Canada.

Ole drove school buses for Decorah Community Schools 19 years and enjoyed driving the baseball team and other extracurricular activities.

He also enjoyed playing cards, horseshoes and billiards with family and friends. Ole was a lifetime member of Glenwood Lutheran Church and was active in Lutheran Brotherhood Council, ushering and sharing coffee after worship.
