Juliet Amanda Kratz

Juliet Amanda Kratz, 87, of Cresco and formerly of Ridgeway, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at St. Mary's hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 7, at 1:30 p.m., at Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway, with the Rev. Phillip and Ginny Olson officiating.

Martha Olson was the organist. The Rev. Phillip Olson sang "Precious Lord". The congregation sang "Rock of Ages", "Beautiful Savior" and "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus' Name".

Casket bearers were Randy Cray, Dale Gesell, Gary Hovden, John Lubke, Tom Ryan and Mark Thomson.

Burial was at the New Oregon Cemetery in Cresco. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Juliet Amanda (Hopperstad) Kratz was born Oct. 6, 1912, at home in Lincoln Township, Winneshiek County, the daughter of John Endre and Ane Jacobina (Nali) Hopperstad.

She was baptized Oct. 27, 1912, at Lincoln Lutheran Church and confirmed Sept. 4, 1927, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, Minnesota.

Her first language was Norwegian and Juliet learned English so she could go to school. She attended rural schools in Lincoln Township and Ridgeway High School for three years.

Juliet then transferred to Cresco High School for normal training to complete her teaching certificate. She also attended Luther College, taking a number of education courses over the years.

She taught in her home school, Lincoln No. 6, then at the New Oregon Township School in Howard County.

Then Juliet was married to Leonard S. Kratz June 10, 1936, at First Lutheran Church in Cresco. They had three children. She farmed with Leonard the rest of their married life, which was 59 years on Juliet's home farm north of Ridgeway in Madison Township.

Then she taught at Gilbetson School in Madison Township, then back to Lincoln No. 6, and her last teaching was at Kendallville rural school in Fremont Township of Winneshiek County.

Juliet helped Jarla Clauson of Decorah compile the history of rural education in Winneshiek County.

She enjoyed gardening -- both produce and flowers, reading, needlework, and family and friends. Juliet also is remembered as a good cook.

She was an active member of Orleans Lutheran Church. She was in the Ladies Aid a number of years, including serving as president.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol and Jim Thomson of Punta Gorda, Fla., Deanna and Bob Codner of Clarksdale, Ariz., and Douglas and Susan Kratz of Boone; five grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, Mark and Kathleen Thomson, Nolon and Alyssa of Atlanta, Ga., Janel and Randy Cray, Matthew, Andrea and Syndey of Lime Springs, Steven Kratz of Clinton, Lynette and Jason Brogden, Jonathon, Jacob and Haley of Boone, Robert Codner, Jr., Newport News, Va., Mary Lee of Roanoke, Va. and Deanna Young of Wichita, Kan.

She is also survived by one brother, Lester Hopperstad of La Crosse, Wis.; five sisters-in-law, Edith Hopperstad of Wayzata, Minn., Helen Zikuda of Waterloo, Loretta Mustard of Yakima, Wash., and Dorothy Slifka of Waukon, and Isabelle Kratz of Cresco; and many nieces and nephews.

Juliet Kratz was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard, who died Jan. 21, 1999; four brothers, Kenneth, Gilbert, Ernest and Johnnie; and one sister, Margaret Farnsworth.
