Gladys Dorothea (Vick) Engen Pecinovsky
Gladys Dorothea Vick Engen Pecinovsky, 79, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at the Regional Health Services of Howard County hospital in Cresco.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m., at the Madison Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, with the Revs. Phillip and Ginny Olson officiating.
Casket bearers were Richard Jevne, Jim Womeldorf, Roger Vick, Earl Ostrander, Mark Bruening and Henry Miene.
Burial was at the church cemetery. The Conway Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Gladys was born near Decorah June 27, 1921, the daughter of Herfred and Mary (Hellestvedt) Vick. She was baptized and confirmed in Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in Glenwood Township of Winneshiek County.
She attended the rural Glenwood school.
On June 4, 1942, she was united in marriage to Truman Engen. To this union, five children were born. They farmed in the Decorah and Harmony (Minn.) areas.
Truman died Oct. 26, 1968. On Oct. 16, 1976, Gladys married Donald J. Pecinovsky at Madison Lutheran Church.
Gladys was a member of Madison Lutheran Church, ALCW, V.F.W., Parents Without Partners, and NARFE. She was active in her church, singing in the church choir and teaching Sunday School for more than 30 years.
She liked to embroidery, quilt, clean, sing, dance, work in her flower garden, play cards and add to her elephant collection. Her favorite times were with her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Donald; her children and their spouses, Gerald and Lorna Engen of Blaine, Minn., Sharon and Dale Roher of Decorah, Linda and Carl Hjelmeland of Decorah, and Vince Engen of Aurora, ill.; and her step-children and their spouses, Sue and Jim Downey of Colorado Springs, Colo., Linda Rose of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mike and Marian Pesky of Sioux City.
There are 19 grandchildren, Crystal Neuman, Ceann Haluptzok, Jason Engen, P. D. Roher, Tina Malone, Ann Marie Hjelmeland, Jennifer Holzer, Patricia Whiterock, Dana Jo Engen, Cara Engen, Brian Engen, Laura Pesky, Shannon Stabile, Nicole VanerLinden, Brian Pesky, Todd Utzig, Chad Utzig, Heather Downey and Ryan Downey.
Also surviving are 16 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Myrtle Boe and Eleanor Womeldorf, both of Decorah.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Truman Engen, who died Oct. 26, 1968; one son, David Engen, who died Sept. 16, 1973; a daughter-in-law, Judy (Spilde) Engen; two brothers, Vernon and Norman Vick; and two sisters, Hilda Jevne and Cora Ostrander.
