Leo L. Hammel

Leo L. Hammel, 87, of Decorah, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at the Aase Haugen Home.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m., at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kim Smith officiating.

Alan Sensor will be the organist. Soloist Sarah Voorhees will sing "On Eagle's Wings" and "Wind Beneath My Wings." The congregation will sing "Beautiful Savior" and "Amazing Grace."

Casket bearers will be Bruce Hammel, David Hammel, Ronald Hammel, Brian Snyder, David Snyder and Steven Snyder.

Burial will be at Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Visitation will be held at the church Tuesday after 10 a.m.

Leo Hammel was born June 7, 1913, in Ludlow Township of AlIamakee County, the son of Earl and Angie (Folsom) Hammel. He graduated from the Frankville School.

On April 28, 1937, he was united in marriage with Alice B. Sersland at her home in Frankville Township of Winneshiek County by the Rev. Paul Koren.

Leo and Alice farmed for many years, most of them on her home place in Frankville Township. Richard and Barbara Hammel now live and farm there. It became a Century Family Farm in 1999.

Leo was an active member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, serving on the Church Council. He was active on the ASC Committee, Republican Township Committee and served on the County Extension Council.

He was a 52-year Farm Bureau member. Leo helped form the Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin Hereford Association and served as the president for 10 years. He was a lifetime member of the National Hereford Association. In 1999, Leo received the Pioneer Seedstock Award from the Winneshiek County Cattlemen's Association.

After retiring from farming, Leo operated Hammel Trailer Sales. He enjoyed many hobbies, including fishing and watching the Chicago Cubs.

Leo became a resident at the Aase Haugen Home July 28, 2000.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter, seven grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren: Roger and Carol Hammel of Decorah and
children Bruce Hammel of Phoenix, Ariz., and Bonnie Hammel of Chicago, IL.; Rita and Duane Snyder of Decorah and their children Kim and Steve Pettit of Lakeville, Minn., and their two daughters, Lindsey and Leah, Brian
Snyder of Decorah, Steven and Dana Snyder of Lakeville, Minn., and David and Tron Snyder of Rosemount, Minn.; and Richard and Barbara Hammel of Decorah and their daughter Sarah.

Survivors also include five sisters-in-law, Aileen Hammel of Cresco, Marie Sersland of Decorah, Gerda Sersland of Newton, Edith Gipp of Decorah and Rebecca Daniels of Decorah; and one brother-in-law, John Hegg Sr. of Decorah.

Leo Hammel was preceded in. death by his parents; his wife, Alice, who died Nov. 21, 1993; and two brothers, Layton and Dean.
