Ella Barnes
Ella Barnes, 96, of Decorah, died May 11, 2001, at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 14 at 2 p.m. at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah with Pastor Kim Smith officiating.
Organist was Paul Bruvold, and casket bearers were all Ella Barnes' grandchildren.
Internment was in Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery with arrangements by French and Balik Funeral Home of Decorah.
Ella Elizabeth Naab was born Sept. 24, 1904 in Springfield, S.D., the daughter of Frederick and Mary Elizabeth (Hamilton) Naab.
At the age of 5 she moved with her family to Ocheydedan, Iowa and then to Bonair, Iowa.
She graduated from Cresco High School and then attended Normal Teachers Training. She taught school at the Fremont Country School near Harmony, Minn.
Ella Naab married Lester Barnes April 27, 1929 in Cresco. They farmed in Fremont Township south of Harmony until 1946 when they moved east of Decorah. She lived there until she entered the nursing home in 1997.
Ella Barnes' greatest love was taking care of her family. She also enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, crocheting and making many quilts and afghans for her family and friends.
She was a member of Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, Woodside Mission Circle and was a 4-H leader.
Survivors include three sons: Richard and Donna Barnes of Harmony; Allen Barnes of Hesper and Kenneth and Yvonne Barnes of Decorah; three daughters, Elizabeth Mostrom of Albert Lea, Minn.; Eileen and Earl Smith of Hudson, Iowa and Dorothy and John Esse of Ely, Minn.; one daughter-in-law, Ila Barnes of Rochester, Minn.; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren.
Ella Barnes was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester Barnes; a son Ronald Barnes; a son-in-law, Spencer Mostrom; one granddaughter, Karen Mostrom; two great grandchildren, Ricky Lester Barnes and Cory Matzen; two sisters, Grace Bessman and Esther Elders, and two brothers, Reuben and Lloyd Naab.
