Roberta Mehaffy

Roberta J. Mehaffy, 91, of Decorah and formerly of Mediapolis, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility of Decorah following a short illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 28, at 10, a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Mediapolis, with the Rev. John Gaulke officiating.

Korkee Carruthers was the organist. Joyce Butler was the soloist.

Casket bearers were Ivan Eland, Kollin Alfred, Dale Deitrick, Doug Craft, Doug Eland and Leland Hobbs. Burial was at the Kossuth Cemetery in Mediapolis.

Handling arrangements were the French and Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and the Hagele and Hont Funeral Home in Mediapolis.

Roberta (Eland) Mehaffy was born July 23,1907 in Mediapolis, the daughter of Robert E. and Mary Jane (Welch) Eland. She graduated from Mediapolis High School and taught at rural school in Des Moines County.

On May 1, 1926, she was united in marriage with Horace P. Mehaffy in Burlington.

Roberta lived in the Mediapolis area all her life until moving to Decorah about four years ago. She was a homemaker and farm wife. Roberta enjoyed reading and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Gordon and Nancy Mehaffy of Henderson, Nev., one daughter, Cheryl and Roger Craft of Decorah; two grandchildren, Doug Craft and Connie Krueger of Decorah; two great-grandchildren, Brittany and Emily Krueger of Decorah; and one brother, Ivan Eland of Cedar Falls.

Roberta Mehaffy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Horace Mehaffy, who died in 1994; two brothers, Kermit and Bob Eland; and four sisters, Thelma and Ella, and one year-old twins.
