Bernice Giblin
Bernice Giblin, 95, of Postvllle, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at the Postville Good Samaritan Center after a short illness.
A funeral mass was held Monday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Ossian with Msgr. Cletus Hawes officiating.
Organist was Al Sensor, song leader was Arlene Brockman and special music was provided by Nichole, Noelle and Danielle Johnson. Gift carriers were Bernice Giblin's grandchildren.
Inurnment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Parnell, Iowa, with Ossian Funeral Chapel handling arrangements.
Bernice Neva Giblin was born Nov. 16, 1905, in South English, Iowa, the daughter of John and Nellie (Greenlee) VanAuken.
She received her primary education by attending a country school in North English, Iowa, and attended high school in Denver, Colo. In 1925, she graduated from business college in Sigourney, Iowa.
She was married to Francis Giblin July 20,1927 in Ottumwa.
They made their home in Chicago, Ill.; North English and Edgewood, Iowa, before moving to Ossian in 1940.
The Giblins were parents of two children, Michael Fancis and Jean Ann.
Bernice Giblin worked at the Silver Springs Creamery with her husband until 1955. The Giblins then moved to Garrison, Iowa. In 1965, they moved to Cedar Rapids, where Bernice Giblin worked for Killian's Department Store
until her retirement in 1969. She then returned to Ossian. From 1983-1994 Bernice Giblin resided in Fresno, Calif., with her daughter and son-in-law, returning to Ossian in 1994.Bernice Giblin was a member of the St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church and its Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters of America, and past member of the Ossian Women Club, the South Winn Golf and Country Club, and the Altura Club.
She enjoyed cooking and teaching her great-granddaughters to cook, and crocheted many beautiful gifts while teaching others to crochet
Surviving Bernice Giblin is her daughter, Jean and Dean Barnes of Ossian; a granddaughter, Brenda and Dave Johnson of Ossian; a grandson, Brad and Diane Barnes of Clovis, Calif.; three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Bernice Neva Giblin was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis Giblin in 1965; a son, Michael Francis, Jr., in 1928; a brother, T. W. VanAuken; and three sisters: Blanch Miller, Clelia McCombs and Marvel Kelly.
