Ceal M. Stuart
Ceal Stuart, 99, of Fort Atkinson, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the Aase Haugen Nursing in Decorah following a short illness.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, with Rev. John Moser officiating.
Lector was Sister Mildred Leuenberger OSF, and music was provided by organist Rita Schmitt and the St. John's Choir.
Casket bearers were Art Huber, Floyd Hackman, Mel Leuenberger, Phil French, Arnold Wiest and Herbert Rausch.
Interment was at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Fort Atkinson, with arrangements by Chekal Funeral Home, Fort Atkinson.
Ceal M. Stuart was born May 15, 1901, the daughter of John and Mary (Panoch) Loesch near Spillville.
She was baptized and confirmed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville and attended rural schools and St. Wenceslaus. She moved with her family to Fort Atkinson in 1920.
She was working at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minn. when she met her husband, Murdock "Mert" Stuart. They were married June 8,1927 in Winona.
Mert and Ceal Stuart moved to Fort Atkinson in 1942 to take care of her parents. After their deaths, Ceal Stuart worked at Bucheit Produce in Calmar for 15 years.
She was a member of St. John's Church and was active in the Ladies Guild. She also belonged to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and also volunteered with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Ceal enjoyed gardening and taking care of her flowers. She became a resident of Aase Haugen Nursing Home in May 1988 and enjoyed working in the activity room, playing bingo and playing cards.
Surviving Ceal M. Stuart are a sister, Clara Leuenberger of Ossian; several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
Ceal M. Stuart was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mert Stuart, in 1988; two sisters, Theresa Leuenberger and Anna Tigges; and two brothers, George and Clem Loesch.
