Robert Joseph Kovarik

Robert Joseph Kovarik, 81, of Spillville, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah after a short illness.

A funeral mass was held Thursday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m., at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Doris Thompson was the organist. Dan Silhacek was the soloist.

Casket bearers Jean Ewart, Wayne Kovarik, Roman Kovarik, Sara Clausman, Jeff Landa, Maria Kovarik, Mike Clausman and Katie Clausman.

Interment was at the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. The Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Robert Kovarik was born Feb. 23, 1918, on a farm near Protivin, the son of Adolph and Albina (Koudelka) Kovarik. He attended country school and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin in 1937.

On Nov. 25, 1940, he was married to Helen Taylor at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. To this union three children were born, Cathy, Rosemary and Ronald.

Robert and Helen farmed for many years near Protivin and Spillville. In 1980, they moved to town into the senior citizens apartments where Robert was the resident maintenance man. He continued helping on the farm. He enjoyed his grandchildren and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of Spillville; two daughters, Cathy and Terry Bailey of Kempton, Pa., and Rosemary and Bill Clausman of Waterloo; one son, Ron and Nancy Kovarik of Calmar; eight grandchildren, Jean and Greg Ewart, Jeff and Lori Landa, Mike and Sarah Clausman, Sara Clausman, Katie Clausman, Roman Kovarik, Wayne Kovarik and Maria Kovarik; six great-grandchildren, Greg Ewart Jr., Alex Ewart, Samantha Ewart, Natalie Landa, Luke Landa and Ashley Zilmer; and one brother, Paul Kovarik of Protivin.

Preceding him in death were his parents.
