Emma Snitker

Emma Snitker, 85, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m., at the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church in Frankville, with the Rev. James Walker officiating.

Marian Laterman was the organist and Karla Johnson was the soloist.

Casket bearers were Richard Burr, David Burr, Larry Burr, Jerry Burr, Donna Burr, Danny Burr, Lance Gray, Stacy Bechtel, Hollie Gray and Erin Keehner.

Burial was at the Salem Cemetery in rural Waukon. The Schutte Funeral Service handled arrangements.

Emma Karoline (Timmerman) Bechtel Snitker was born May 25, 1913, in Allamakee County, near Monona, the daughter of William and Minnie (Witt) Timmerman. She attended country school near her home.

On Sept. 27, 1934, she was married to Martin Bechtel at the Salem United Church of Christ near Waukon. To this union three children were born. They lived west of Frankville for a time. Martin died in 1945.

Emma had also lived near Monona and Waukon. On Sept. 17, 1965, Emma was married to Wesley Snitker.

She was an excellent cook and enjoyed the large family gatherings. Emma also liked dancing and listening to music.

Survivors include her children, Lucille and Donald Burr of Cresco, Evelyn and Donald Gray of Waukon and Roger and Ellen Bechtel of Postville; 11 stepchildren, Gary and Nancy Snitker of Cody, Wyo., Gale and Janie Snitker of Belle, Mo., Grant and Sharon Snitker of Waukon, Judy and Fred Barnhouse of Marion, Kathy Vaupel of Allentown, Pa., Karen and Floyd Ashbacher of Decorah, Sandy and Leon Felke of Decorah, Karla Eldridge of Marion, Greg and Mary Snitker of Albuquerque, N.M., Patty and Rick Hughes of Postville, and Gordon and Julie Snitker of Decorah.

There also are 10 grandchildren, Richard, David, Larry, Jerry, Donna and Danny Burr, Lance and Hollie Gray, and Stacy Bechtel and Erin Keehner; three great-grandchildren, Katie Burr, Corey Bechtel and Kayla Keehner; many step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; and a sister, Mabel (Verni) Kruse of Monona.

Emma Snitker was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Martin Bechtel; her second husband, Wesley Snitker; two sisters, Anne Ferguson and Selda Topel; eight brothers, Henry, Fred, Grover, Harry, Herman, Willis, Theodore and Frank Timmerman; and two stepchildren, Janet (Snitker) Larson and Gorman Snitker.
