Marlin Sullivan
Marlin Sullivan, 76, of Decorah, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2001 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah, following a lengthy illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 15 at St. Benedict's Church in Decorah, with Rev. Robert Hirsch officiating.
Lector was Sister Brian Kelly.
Ushers were Roy Macal and Kevin and Amanda Gerleman.
Organist was Alan Sensor, and Stacy Carolan was soloist and trumpeter.
Casket bearers were Kevin Ihde, Gary Rustad, Fred Gerleman, John Sullivan, Mike Halverson and Kenneth Carolan.
Interment was at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Winthrop Iowa, with French and Balik Funeral Home of Decorah handling arrangements.
Marlin J. Sullivan was born Feb. 15, 1924, the son of Leo and Lelia (Nabholz) Sullivan in Rowley, Iowa.
He attended and graduated from Hazelton High School in 1941.
Marlin Sullivan served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Geraldine "Jen" Turner on April 12, 1950. They farmed near Independence and Manchester.
They moved to Decorah in 1960 and purchased the garbage business and ran that until 1972. Marlin Sullivan then owned and operated the Kozy Korner in Ridgeway until 1976.
He went to work in 1973 for Reilly Construction until he retired in 1986.
Marlin Sullivan was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church and the Helof-Holm VFW Post #1977 and the Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post #163, where he served as past Grand Cootie.
His greatest love was his grandchildren, going fishing, eating sweet corn, and playing Santa Claus for local children.
Surviving Marlin Sullivan are his two daughters, Val and Carolan Walter of Missouri Valley, Iowa and Maureen Sullivan and friend Jim Harvel of Tombstone, Ariz.; one son, Pat and Pam Sullivan of Decorah; four grandchildren: Stacy Carolan of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Samantha, Jessica, and Nicholas Sullivan of Decorah; four brothers: Loren and Lorna Sullivan of Quasqueton, Iowa; Clarence and Delores Sullivan of Monticello, Iowa; Don and Linda Sullivan of Winthrop, Iowa; and Dean and Virginia Sullivan of Lamont, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Jean Sullivan of Quasqueton, Iowa; and one brother-in-law, Bob Wilson of Roswell, N.M.
Marlin J. Sullivan was preceded in death by his wife, Jeri Sullivan, in 1993; his parents; one sister, Maxine Wilson; and one brother, Vaughan Sullivan.
