Mabel Christine Hotvedt
Mabel Hotvedt, 94, of Decorah, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at the Northgate Care Center in Waukon after a short illness.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 28, at 11 a.m., at Glenwood Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, with the Rev. Phillip Olson and Associate in Ministry Ginny Olson officiating.
Martha Olson was the organist. The Rev. Olson sang "The Birthday of a King". The congregation also sang "Children of the Heavenly Father", "Rock of Ages" and "I Know of A Sleep".
Casket bearers were Orvin Hotvedt, Clayton Engen, Randy Rausch, Lester Sorenson, John Ford and Kendall Thompson.
Burial was at the Glenwood East Cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Mabel Christine (Ness) Hotvedt was born Jan. 21, 1904, to Carl and Mathilde (Ask) Ness in Madison Township of Winneshiek County. She was baptized Feb. 21, 1904, and confirmed June 1, 1919, at the Madison Lutheran Church.
Oh Dec. 27, 1941, she was married to Adolph Hotvedt and to this union one son, Maynard, was born.
Mabel and Adolph farmed in Madison Township a number of years. In 1952, they bought a farm in Glenwood Township and joined the Glenwood Lutheran Church. Mabel was active in ELCW and Mission Circle there.
Adolph suffered a stroke in 1974 and died Dec. 11, 1978. Mabel then moved to Decorah where she took care of her brother, Albert, until he died Dec. 21, 1989.
Mabel did some volunteer work at the Aase Haugen Home. She made many quilts for Lutheran World Relief. She enjoyed flowers, reading and making crafts.
Survivors include her son, Maynard and Rita Hotvedt of Decorah; five grandchildren, Scott and Cheryl Hotvedt, Kristi and Carol (Jr.) Mincks, Brian and Donna Hotvedt, Robin Hotvedt, and Dana and Sara Hotvedt; seven great-grandchildren, Nicole and Sarah Mincks, Evan Brainard, Chase and Jade Hotvedt; and Allie and Walker Hotvedt; and nieces and nephews.
Mabel Hotvedt was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three sisters, Clara Thompson, Helga Ness and Agnes Engen; and three brothers, Albert, Melvin and Henry Ness.
