Sophie L. Halverson

Sophie L. Halverson, 76, died Thursday, May 18, 2000.

Funeral services were held at Ascension Lutheran Church in Riverside, Illinois, Monday, May 22, at 11 a.m.

Entombment was at the Woodlawn Mausoleum. The Kuratko Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Casket bearers were Bob Halverson, David Halverson, Jennifer Halverson, Mel Swan, Gene Halverson and Jay Sukach.

Sophie (Sukach) Halverson was born in Chicago Oct. 9, 1923, the daughter of John and Katherine Sukach. She had two younger brothers, John and Donald. Sophie met Ernest Halverson, originally of Decorah, in Chicago, where they were married April 10, 1948. Last month they celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.

The couple had two children, Robert and Sandra.

Almost 50 years ago, they joined Ascension Lutheran Church of Riverside. Both took an active role in church life. Sophie expressed her love for children by volunteering to teach Sunday School for several years. She was active in the women's group as well, and enjoyed extending hospitality to the church's members and visitors.

Sophie was devoted to her God, her family and her friends. She often expressed her appreciation in caring ways to a wide circle of people, both within and beyond her family.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest Halverson; son Robert and Linda Halverson and their children, David and Jennifer; and daughter Sandra "Sandy" and Mel Swan, and their daughter, Cali.
